ACCELERATING LEARNING FOR ALL

WHY AlfA ?

The problem of education is primarily a problem of foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN). Without the foundational skills, there is no education.

Proposal

Transforming Education with ALfA Pedagogy

UN Agencies Data

Pre-COVID: 53% of the world’s children under ten lacked the foundational skills to read, write, and do basic arithmetic.

Post-COVID: 70% of the world's children under ten cannot read a simple text & do basic arithmetic after five years of schooling.

Pedagogy

The Missing Ingredient

The crisis in learning is a crisis of pedagogy—how we teach the foundational skills and how quickly the children learn them. Rote methods of teaching and learning are holding hostage the enormous potential of the children, many of whom drop out and suffer indignation the rest of their lives.

Overview

ALfA Pedagogy 'Learning for All'

Statement of Purpose Our goal is to revolutionize education in states and territories by offering an accelerated learning program that empowers children to achieve significant academic milestones in a matter of months, not years.

background

The program launched in 2022 in India, is being offered as a gift to the world by DEVI SANSTHAN. The program can be started any day as a pilot, or implemented nationwide after a brief training to your managers, master trainers and teachers as part of MOOT: Massive Open Online Training which has so far seen the participation from 66 countries. The program is presently available in 33 languages (other languages being added rapidly as per request).

After the intensive phase, children demonstrate

Proficiency in foundational mathematics and literacy skills.

Holistic Development: Develop 4C Skills (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity & Critical Thinking) and 4C Traits (Citizenship, Climate Consciousness, Character & Connectedness) of the 21st century.

Program Structure

A 30-day Pilot Program

Schools are randomly allocated to implementation and reference groups.

A standardized baseline test is conducted in all schools.

Teachers in implementation schools are trained

The ALfA program is implemented for 30 working days.

An endline test is conducted; & the results are analyzed.

Pilot Approach

Initiate Pilot Programs Across States or Territories

Conduct government testing to compare outcomes between ALfA and non-ALfA regions after 30 days of implementation.

Scaling Up: National Scaling Options

  • Expand the program to more schools
  • Integrate the program into state curricula

Engagement and Collaboration

Schedule a meeting to discuss the proposal further, either virtually or in person.

Chapter 8 of 'rebuilding resilient Education systems after the covid-19 Pandemic', published in march 2023, Documents the ALfA program in Shamli, and recommends its Widespread adoption in up.

Effect size is a statistical measure of an intervention’s impact. A business-as-usual school year in developing countries typically raises literacy levels by 0.15 to 0.21 standard deviations. This means that the ALfA 45-day intervention raised learning levels by the equivalent of 2-4 years worth of school.

Reference: Evans, David K.; Yuan, Fei. 2019. Equivalent Years of Schooling: A Metric to Communicate Learning Gains in Concrete Terms. Policy Research Working Paper; No. 8752. World Bank, Washington, DC.

Students in the intervention groups had much higher oral reading fluency than those in the reference group. For Grades 4-5, 50% of the intervention group students were able to read the passage at >90 words per minute compared to 20% of reference group students.

The effect size* of the project was 0.23 for Grade 3 students and 0.89 for Grade 5… the results suggest there is significant value in pursuing the ALfA model in other schools if implemented in a coherent, structured, and coordinated manner.
